Mount Everest (Chinese call Zhumulangma; Nepali Romanized: Sagarmatha; Tibetan: Chomolungma) is Earth's highest mountain above sea level, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point. Its elevation (snow height) of 8,848.86 m (29,031.7 ft) was most recently established in 2020 by the Nepali and Chinese authorities.
Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary made the first official ascent of Everest in 29 May 1953, using the southeast ridge route.
There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal and the other from the north in Tibet. While not posing substantial technical climbing challenges on the standard route, Everest presents dangers such as altitude sickness, weather, and wind, as well as significant hazards from avalanches and the Khumbu Icefall.
After final preparations for the historic Everest Expedition in Kathmandu, Asian Hiking Team fly to Lukla and begin our Hotel/ Lodge trekking up the Khumbu Valley into Everest base camp. We will establish our base camp at 5300m at the foot of the notorious Khumbu Icefall before making our way to Camp 1 at 6200m. We will climb to Camp 2 at 6,600m smacks in the middle of the Western Camp up to the Lhotse face to Camp 3 at 7200m. Finally, we'll head up the South Col or Camp 4 at 8000 m before making it to Mount Everest summit view.
Base Camp to Camp 1: If everything else works out, you don't have to segue because of an unstable wall or something nasty happening, you should be in Camp 1 after about six hours.
From Camp 1 to Camp 2: About four to five hours. If all fixed ropes are set, and you're not in a traffic jam up, you'll be across quickly.
Camp 2 to Camp 3, Lhotse Wall: About 6 hours get you from Camp 2 there. Again, this is assuming you'll be able to just do your thing, and it's not a fun place to be.
Camp 3 to Camp 4 Death Zone: Your last stop before the Everest summit. It usually takes at least six hours, often longer, because now you're fighting diminishing oxygen, the stress and exhaustion from the previous legs, and a lack of sleep.
Summit day, if you manage to get out before midnight, you're in luck (Everest expedition!). You get to see the Mount Everest summit view here. If Hillary Step isn't backed up, you'll be done and one summit pin richer in about 10 to 14 hours. If you can't make it to the summit before 1pm, you won't make it, so there's very little that can extend this leg unless bad stuff happens.
